Hygge.

Although not a common word is North America, hygge (HOOG UH) is known widely in the Nordic countries. It is simply a way of life for arguably the happiest countries on Earth with Finland, Denmark and Iceland ranking in the Top 3 Happiest countries in 2022. Wikipedia’s definition of hygge is a word in Danish and Norwegian that describes a mood of coziness and "comfortable conviviality" with feelings of wellness and contentment.

Hygge is something I try to practice everyday, even in a small way and sometimes we are even doing hygge without intentionally doing hygge! Hygge is all about warm, soft candlelight, cozy blankets, comfy socks, indulgent food, hot drinks and quality time. I mean I am all about putting my pyjamas’ on as soon as I get home and curling up on the couch under a blanket. Do chips and Halloween candy count as indulgent foods?? LOL. I am not a tea drinker so my morning coffee is my hot drink of choice and of course quality time watching movies or playing a board game are some of our favourite activities. My husband and I both come from Scandinavian backgrounds – he is Norwegian and I am Icelandic so it’s no wonder we have an affinity for the hygge lifestyle.

I challenge you to do something “hygge” this week;

-Take a walk outside in nature

-Try a new recipe

-Wrap yourself in a cozy blanket and watch a movie

-Relax with a cup of tea or hot chocolate and a book

-Buy a new Hygge Candle Co candle and indulge in a screen free evening

-Learn a new hobby, painting, crocheting, writing, photography
